We visit the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires and receive a country briefing led by a current U.S. Foreign Service Officer (FSO) to learn about historical and contemporary economic and political conditions in Argentina and the current relationship between our two countries.

Ex-ESMA/Espacio Memoria

During El Proceso, the 1976-83 Dictatorship, human rights groups estimate that more than 100,000 people were tortured and more than 30,000 people “disappeared.” On this excursion, we visit and walk through one of the central sites where many people were held, tortured, and murdered.

Asado (BBQ) and Wine Lecture

Argentina is internationally famous for its beef and wine. We attend an asado to learn how different meats are cooked and paired with specific types of grapes. The owner also explains wine-growing regions in the country, how different grapes are produced and manufactured, and how they are sold within the country or exported.

From its origins as a farmer’s market, the Viktualienmarkt is today a daily market of gourmet and diverse fare and a popular gathering place. Students will complete a scavenger hunt as one of their assignments.

Orvieto

Orvieto is a small fortified city approximately an hour and a half outside of Rome that was founded by the ancient Etruscans. Dramatically perched atop a volcanic rock, students spend the day exploring the city’s famous basilica, quaint medieval streets lined with shops and cafes, museums, caves, and panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.
