Each and Every Year!
Founded in 1975, KIIS is a faculty-led study abroad consortium of colleges and universities in Kentucky and surrounding states. “My experience in Paris and Munich were absolutely life changing! Emerging myself into the cultures taught me valuable lessons in adaptation and acceptance and of course it was a lot of fun doing so! I also made life long friends on my study abroad, definitely one of the best parts.”
–Sarah, Paris-Munich Winter
“Studying with the Cahill’s in the Middle East was AMAZING, fantastic, memorable, awesome, AWESOME, AWESOME.”
– LeAndra, Israel & Egypt
“I was incredibly nervous before my trip, but it turned out to be the most enlightening and extraordinary experience of my life. Seeing the medieval towns, ancient pieces of art and where our civilization began in person defy the ability to describe. The professors and my fellow students made it all the more enjoyable, and I know I have made lifelong friends. Spending a month abroad is the best way to experience, understand and enjoy the culture and the people and I wouldn't trade my time there for anything.”
- Sarah, Italy
“My KIIS Winter Italy trip was amazing! I cannot believe how much I got to know this city in the two weeks I was there. My professor knew Italy well and used her knowledge and experiences to guide our stay in a way that could not of happened if I visited Italy on my own. I cannot describe how real and fascinating lectures are when they're sitting in the pews of a beautiful basilica or over a cappuccino at a cafe a few blocks away from the Colosseum.”
- Caroline, Italy Winter
“My favorite experience was spending time with my host family, whether practicing piano with their children or discussing language and history by the fire.”
- Tobias, France Spring Semester
“Staying with a host family really helped make my study abroad experience more enjoyable. My host mom showed me around town to help me get acquainted, told me about different events going on in town, introduced me to authentic cuisine, and took care of me like any mom would. Having her there throughout the trip helped calm my fears of living abroad and made it one of the most enjoyable experiences of my time in college."
- Maegan, Spain I
“Studying abroad in Paris was the best experience of my life. I had the opportunity to see painting and monuments that can take some people a lifetime to see. I met some amazing people and I will never forget the experience I shared with my peers whether it be walking down the streets, the nightlife or just doing homework in the park.”
- Kaharie, Paris I
“I have worked in a community pharmacy in Bowling Green [KY] for awhile now and was able to spend most of my practicum time in the pharmacy in Tanzania. The parallels between the two work environments were striking. I noticed that the atmosphere of real concern for the patients and the betterment of their health was exactly the same in both pharmacy settings across the world.”
- Allison, Tanzania
“I chose to study abroad in Spain so that I could improve my Spanish, but I ended up learning so much more than that. I learned more in these three months than I ever could've in a classroom.”
- Katie, Spain Spring Semester
“Going to Prague has been the best experience of my life, I met amazing people here, Prague claims the best memories I've ever had.”
- Gerik, Prague
"Through KIIS, I was able to experience Mexico's culture, visit Mayan Pyramids, and become more fluent in Spanish; these memories and lessons are unforgettable. Besides learning the Spanish language, one of my favorite experiences were that of tasting all of these flavorful foods: sopa de Lima, cochinita pibil, queso relleno, and many more."
- Andrew, Merida Mexico
“While listening to my professor lecture about the Greek theater at Epidaurus, a little girl stepped into the middle of the stage. She sang a song in a language that we couldn’t understand, but by the end of the song, our eyes were filled with tears. The spirit of the lecture, theater, and study abroad were captured perfectly in that moment.”
– Maren, Greece
“When people ask me how my time in Greece was, It is a lot harder to answer than I had originally thought. Greece was so much more than words can even describe, but I try my best; it was life-changing, inspiring, and beautiful. I loved the country and the people that I get to call my friends.”
- Kaelin, Greece
“Being a biology major I was able to actually go to places important scientist were born or even studied and worked at! I saw places where Bohr, Brahe, Einstein, and even Steno worked!”
- Chloe, Denmark
“The hike is never easy, but the view is always worth it!”
– Allison, Greece
“My favorite experience was getting lost in the Madrid airport after going to Italy for the long weekend. I was able to get around and ask questions without having to use my Spanish dictionary and it was one of the proudest moments.”
- Emily, Spain I
“The study abroad trip to Greece made the learning of ancient Greece and Greeks more personal because I was witnessing the locations and artifacts that we were discussing which made it seem more real. We weren't talking about events that happened in a far away land but were discussing events that happened on the very ground we were stepping on. To me, it just blew my mind and made me love every minute of my journey.”
“I loved learning about the Mayan culture and how much architectural, cultural, and dialectic influence they have in this area of Mexico. Being able to climb Mayan pyramids and eat the same style dishes they still eat was probably my favorite. Also, it added to the cultural experience to live with my host mom because she only spoke Spanish so I was able to learn Spanish naturally as well as in the textbook.”
- Amber, Merida Mexico
"Studying abroad in Paris and Munich, I found a wealth of great people (many of whom will remain lifelong friends), delicious foods, good times, and sights that simply cannot be reproduced with a camera. So I encourage you to get lost somewhere and see what adventures are waiting on you to be found. Bon voyage!"
- Jared, Paris-Munich Winter
“My time in Austria taught me to thrive outside my comfort zone and to find happiness right where I was while opening opportunities at home to further my education and better my employment.”
- Tara, Austria
“When you travel or study abroad, everyone comments on pictures, but the true value isn’t only what you see. The hidden worth of your experience returns with you in unexpected ways. It can be a new appreciation for corner coffee shops, new confidence in riding the subway or learning to communicate using charades.”
- Shaleena, Chile
"Leave your comfort zone at home. Studying abroad is about pushing your personal boundaries to truly experience the world around you. Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Ask for directions in a new language, try unusual food at a street fair, and buy the bus ticket to a magnificent waterfall 17 hours away. You learn more from those experiences than the ones found within the confines of your hotel room. Trust me, you won’t regret it."
- Gabrielle, Argentina
"This will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable experiences of my entire life. The knowledge you gain, the experiences you have, and the friends you make will be more than worth the trip. Austria is the best country in Europe; it has the beauty of Switzerland, Germany, and Italy all in one all the while having German as its official language.”
- Nickolas, Austria
“KIIS was such a special experience that I will never forget. Over the four weeks, I got to visit the most extraordinary places and create bonds with new people overseas. I learned more than I ever imagined about the places we visited and also about myself as an individual. I encourage anyone who ever has the chance to experience the KIIS Italy program.”
- Maggie, Italy
“Not only is Greece one of the most historically known places in the world, but arguably the most beautiful.”
– Sabrina, Greece
“Berlin is a city steeped in history, yet the city is still very young. Having been bombed at the end of World War II the city is filled with buildings that are reconstructions, thus modern, but that carry the weight of their history. In the course of four days one can barely scratch the surface of everything there is to do in Berlin.”
– Michael, Berlin
"I had an amazing time traveling through Slavic Europe. It was great to get out of my comfort zone and experience a completely different culture."
- Julia, Slavic Europe
"My time abroad in Mérida, Mexico changed my perception of the area to include a rich history, economic growth, and a unique culture. I recently returned to Mérida for spring break to see friends I made while abroad and experience one of my favorite cities once again. It felt like going home!"
- Blair, Mexico Semester

- Tonya, Berlin
- Samantha, Denmark
“Visit Morocco. Embrace the dizzying chaos of the crowds. Stand in awe at the enormity of the dessert. Explore the gateway to Africa with openness and curiosity. You’ll find yourself enchanted by the architecture, overwhelmed by the medinas, humbled by Moroccan hospitality, and spellbound by an amazing country.”
- Anna, Morocco
“Traveling to Prague opened my eyes culturally. The city is breathtaking and there is so much to learn and explore. I also love that Prague is centrally located and offers convenience for traveling around Europe. I never once felt unsafe the entire time that I studied abroad in Prague."
- Kate, Prague
