The KIIS Advantage
Non-Profit Study Abroad
Credit Toward Degree Completion
Each and Every Year!
Founded in 1975, KIIS is a faculty-led study abroad consortium of colleges and universities in Kentucky and surrounding states. KIIS is dedicated to providing exceptional— and affordable— international education programs for college credit. We believe study abroad should be an integral part of any degree program, regardless of academic discipline, and should prepare students to be globally competent upon graduation.
“The best part about KIIS is the friendships I've made. I've met very wonderful people and I'm happy we share such an amazing bond!”
- Marissa, Japan
“I have worked in a community pharmacy in Bowling Green [KY] for awhile now and was able to spend most of my practicum time in the pharmacy in Tanzania. The parallels between the two work environments were striking. I noticed that the atmosphere of real concern for the patients and the betterment of their health was exactly the same in both pharmacy settings across the world.”
- Allison, Tanzania
“Being a biology major I was able to actually go to places important scientist were born or even studied and worked at! I saw places where Bohr, Brahe, Einstein, and even Steno worked!”
- Chloe, Denmark
“It was a dream. When I stepped off the plane in Paris, France I still couldn't believe it was a reality. The city became our classroom, and our home, for the month aboard. The people I met and lived with are not ones I will soon forget. I learned a lot about myself and gained a new perspective of the world.”
- Alexis, Paris I
“Greece was… phenomenal to say the least. It truly felt like a home away from home. The food was great (which is saying something because I am a VERY picky eater), but the sights were even better. Being able to walk through a modern city/country and millennia old ruins almost simultaneously is absolutely astounding.”
- Sean, Greece
“If you think you want to go to Spain, do it. Even if you're nervous, even if you don't know anyone else who is going, even if you don't speak Spanish that well, do it. Take a chance on this once in a lifetime experience. I promise you won't regret it.”
– Brooklee, Spain Spring Semester
“On the KIIS Costa Rica trip, I realized just how much you need to be immersed in a culture to understand its people, language, and customs. Sure you can read about them in a book or take a language class, but having the opportunity to live with the host families in San Marcos and La Paz was what allowed me to gain a true appreciation for the Spanish language and the people who speak it.”
- Christina, Costa Rica
“Studying with the Cahill’s in the Middle East was AMAZING, fantastic, memorable, awesome, AWESOME, AWESOME.”
– LeAndra, Israel & Egypt
"I've never been somewhere so different and challenging and felt so at peace."
- Sarah, Ecuador
“My experience in Denmark really influenced my perspective on being a global citizen. Being immersed in Danish culture while taking courses related to my major created the perfect summer experience.”
- Sonia, Denmark
“I chose to study abroad in Spain because I wanted to travel to Europe and KIIS offered 6 transferable credit hours that went towards my Spanish major. Studying abroad in Spain is one of my most beautiful memories and I would do anything to relive it one more time with the beautiful people I met along the way.”
– Kristina, Spain II
"Leave your comfort zone at home. Studying abroad is about pushing your personal boundaries to truly experience the world around you. Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Ask for directions in a new language, try unusual food at a street fair, and buy the bus ticket to a magnificent waterfall 17 hours away. You learn more from those experiences than the ones found within the confines of your hotel room. Trust me, you won’t regret it."
- Gabrielle, Argentina
“I have taught and led study tours to Jerusalem since 1993. I lived in Cairo, Egypt for six years, where I directed a semester-long academic program for students from the USA. I speak fluent Arabic as well as some Hebrew and Turkish. I am excited to provide KIIS students an opportunity to study in Israel and Egypt.”
– Richard Cahill, Co-Director
“Study abroad changes the way you think and feel. It’s a crash course in language acquisition and development. Just do it, and do everything to your fullest extent.”
“For me this experience was so eye-opening, getting introduced to different cultures and just seeing how much larger the world actually is… Every little detail of each city, even the street art found there, adds to the certain character of that area.”
“If you want to experience culture, come to Morocco. You'll get a taste of the whole world in just one country. The music, the art, the food, even the dialect are all eclectic and beautiful. Last week I saw a Moroccan band and they sang in eight different languages in one night! Also, simply living the language and the culture allows you to learn so much. It is truly an amazing experience.”
- Sierra, Morocco
"Maya Mexico was just an incredible experience! You simply don't imagine how different life is there since it is so close to the states, but it drastically changed my worldview."
– Mary, Maya Mexico Winter
“I loved my trip and the experience was more than anyone could have given me staying in the states. My favorite day was spent in a town where I learned about culture, food and even improved my Spanish speaking skills. This experience opened my eyes but also made me a better candidate for graduate programs!”
- Krystal, Maya Mexico Winter
“KIIS Munich was a great international experience and I think it will add value to me personally and educationally. It has given me a new perspective on another culture and bolstered my German education from my home university.”

– Amelia, Maya Mexico Winter
“The people I met there in Merida will forever have a special place in my heart. I learned so much about them but also about myself. To truly be fluent in another language, you have to know the culture. You have to know what the words mean, not just how to translate them.”
- Masi, Merida Mexico

“I decided to go back to Germany with the KIIS program a second time...I never regret making this decision. During these two semesters in Regensburg, Germany, I have changed a lot. These changes could not be described precisely or quantified, but they are irreversible reactions.”
- Sibei, Germany Spring Semester
“Staying with a host family really helped make my study abroad experience more enjoyable. My host mom showed me around town to help me get acquainted, told me about different events going on in town, introduced me to authentic cuisine, and took care of me like any mom would. Having her there throughout the trip helped calm my fears of living abroad and made it one of the most enjoyable experiences of my time in college."
- Maegan, Spain I
“My favorite experience was spending time with my host family, whether practicing piano with their children or discussing language and history by the fire.”
- Tobias, France Spring Semester
