Program Overview

Designed to take full advantage of the city’s abundant cultural resources, the KIIS Paris II program offers students a selection of intermediate to advanced French-language courses. With five weeks in Paris, students become intimately familiar with this modern, cosmopolitan city, celebrated for its savoir-faire and joie de vivre. Students are encouraged to use their language skills both in class and while exploring the many sides of this marvelous city. In short, the language experience does not end after exiting the classroom— it only begins as you set out to explore Paris’s venerable architecture, parks, neighborhoods, restaurants, and cafés.

Note: Studying abroad likely is more physically strenuous than you are used to at home. KIIS study abroad programs typically involve approx. 5-10 miles of walking (approx. 10,000-20,000 steps) or the like in a day, including the possibility of walking, hiking, and climbing stairs in heat and humidity, over elevations at higher altitudes, and over rocky terrain. See Health & Wellness for more information.

Language Requirement: Yes, must have at least 6 credit hours of college-level French or equivalent at time of departure for 200-level courses, or 12 credit hours for 300-level courses. All courses taught in French.

Accommodations: Hotel, 2-4 students per room

OrientationMandatory orientation on Saturday, April 13, 2024. See Orientation for more information.

Courses

All courses are taught in French and are 3 credit hours. You may enroll in 1-2 courses.

Intensive FREN 201 Intermediate French I &
Intensive FREN 202 Intermediate French II

Prof. James Donovan

FREN 201 (3hrs) and FREN 202 (3hrs) comprise an accelerated, intensive language sequence intended to fulfill both semesters of intermediate French during the summer. The two courses are taken consecutively during the KIIS Paris 2 program, in Paris, France, during the month of July.  The two courses focus on the skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and cultural competence in an immersive setting. The courses expand grammatical understanding through intensive practice while on-site and focus on oral and written expression, vocabulary building, grammar study, and reading literary and cultural texts.  Students will be required to enroll in both FREN 201 and FREN 202 (for total 6hrs).

FREN 306 Experiencing French Abroad: French Theater in Performance

Dr. Jeff Peters

The goal of this course is to explore the history of the French theater by attending performances of plays in Paris. We will read and discuss the texts of the scheduled play, and, following the performance, continue our discussion through analyses of production choices made by the director and actors. We will try to see works from different genres – comedy, tragedy, experimental, etc. – and from different historical periods. Taught entirely in French.

FREN 323 French Civilization and Culture - Graphic Novels

Dr. Jeorg Sauer

It is easy to recognize images and representations that are quintessentially “American”. The golden arches, sneakers, a baseball cap, and Superman (Truth, justice and the American way). These visual concepts are ingrained in our daily understanding of “ourselves”. But how is another culture imagined visually or represented? We will examine and analyze how comics and graphic novels function on a narrative level visually as well as textually to shape understanding a culture.

All KIIS course credit is awarded by Western Kentucky University. Prior to your KIIS program, please speak with your home campus academic advisor and/or study abroad office to determine course equivalencies. Grades will be transferred to your home institution in mid-August after the completion of the program. Course offerings are subject to change according to enrollment. For more information, visit Transcripts & Grades.

Program Excursions

Outside the City

A day trip outside of Paris is always planned for each group.  We have gone on so many adventures with our students.  We have spent the night at Mont St. Michel and watched the tide come in.  We climbed the towers of Notre Dame de Reims where kings were coronated.  Biking through fields and picnicking on the Seine lead us to Giverny where Monet painted exquisite works.  We have toured D-Day beaches.  Each summer is a new adventure.

Opera, Ballet or Theatre Performance

The stage thrives in Paris.  Take in a concert under the stained glass windows of La Sainte Chapelle.  Or possibly enjoy a ballet staged in the famous Palais Garnier where the Phantom of the Opera lives.  Or see a theatrical performance of a French play at the National Theater.  The arts come alive in the city and we take full advantage of enjoying a good performance.

Art Museums

See the paintings that made Monet famous, or Delacroix’s masterpieces, or some zany surrealist art at one of the National Museums in Paris.  Every summer, we take a tour with a docent who shows us exquisite art and then teaches us about all the scandals or stories told by these works.

French Picnic

A quick French lesson to learn how to interact with merchants, then off to an open air market where we buy supplies for a picnic. Enjoy French cheeses, fresh bread, fruits, salads, and pastries.
