Hólar Cathedral, Iceland

Hólar was northern Iceland’s center of religion and learning for nearly seven centuries (1106-1798). Here was the final stronghold of Catholicism during Iceland’s Reformation, a contentious era that ended when Hólar’s bishop was beheaded at Skálholt Cathedral, in southern Iceland, which we also visit.

Seville

We travel south to Seville in Andalusia for a multi-night excursion. This region is abundant in Moorish architecture and influences from when it was ruled by the Moors. We will explore palaces, museums, the world’s largest Gothic Cathedral, sample exquisite tapas, and enjoy colorful flamenco dancing.

Lund, Sweden

We take a day trip to Lund, where we will enter its famous medieval cathedral, one of the oldest stone buildings still in use in Sweden. Legend holds that Jätten Finn (“Finn the Giant Troll”) helped build the cathedral, and some say that two carved pillars in the crypt depict Jätten Finn and his wife.

Holbox

The Maya Mexico Winter program concludes in the funky artsy beach town of Holbox.  Students observe and analyze the island’s renowned street-art scene, discuss the complicated relationship between tourism development and environmental sustainability, and provide their final-project oral presentations.
