Program Overview

Since 2002, the KIIS Germany Spring Semester Program in Regensburg has provided an ideal setting for students to experience German language, culture, and history. Situated on the Danube River in central Bavaria and approximately 1.5 hours northeast of Munich, this city of nearly 200,000 residents boasts a living history dating back to the 13th century. The KIIS Germany Semester Program lasts nearly five months and is fully integrated into the University of Regensburg’s academic and social life. City buses provide excellent service to the campus, free of charge to students. Computer facilities, a student cafeteria, an extensive library, and recreational opportunities are available on campus, and students have ready access to the internet. A bookstore, an Italian restaurant, an ATM, and a small store for essentials complement the university facilities. Please note that for this program students must at least have 9 hours of college-level German and are sophomore standing by the start of the program.

Language Requirement: German, must have at least 9 hours of college-level German or equivalent. 

Accommodations: Dorm, 1-2 people per room.

Courses

All courses are taught in German and are 3 credit hours except for GERM 306: Experiencing German Abroad, which is a required 6 credit hour course. You must register for either GERM 300 or GERM 430, depending on the number of German classes you had prior to departure. You may enroll in 4 courses for a total of 15 credit hours.

GERM 202: The German-Speaking Lands

Prerequisite: GERM 201 or equivalent.

Introduction to geography, social structures, and recent history. Material drawn from literature, popular culture, and the Internet. You learn to read short texts and express opinions about them.

GERM 306: Experiencing German Abroad

Required

Six-week intensive language course taken at the beginning of your stay at the University of Regensburg.

GERM 314: Introduction to German Literature

Emphasis on major periods, literary types and critical approaches through the study of selected representative works and authors.

GERM 330: German Composition and Conversation

Develops skill in writing and speaking standard German. Stress is on vocabulary building, use of dictionary and control of sentence structures. Skill in spoken German is aimed at enabling you to function in social situations.

GERM 335: Contemporary Culture and Civilization

Study of geography, politics, social customs, culture and contemporary issues of the German-speaking countries.

GERM 430: Advanced German Stylistics

Provides intensive grammar instruction and practice in written German, enabling you to write letters, reports, essays, descriptions, and to discuss literary, cultural, and political topics.

GERM 437: German Literature and Film

A study of German film and film adaptations of German literature. Emphasis on textual analysis, special film terminology, theoretical approaches to film, writing about film.

GERM 455: Topics in Germanic Literary and Cultural Studies

Examines different topics of interest in German literary and cultural studies.

GERM 499: Advanced Studies in German

For guided study in culture, language, or literature. May be repeated for a maximum of six hours of credit.

All KIIS Germany Semester course credit is awarded by the University of Regensburg and transferred to WKU upon successful completion of the semester study abroad program. Prior to your KIIS program, please speak with your home campus academic advisor and/or study abroad office to determine course equivalencies. Grades will be transferred to your home institution by mid-October after the completion of the program. Course offerings are subject to change according to enrollment. Program Excursions

Berlin

A five-day, four-night excursion to the German capital; the specific itinerary for each year’s visit will be determined during the semester. In the past, the excursion has featured a Berlin tour, visits to the Sanssouci palace in Potsdam, and a stop at the German Spy Museum. The excursion also includes time for individual exploration of the city.

Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau

A visit to two of Bavarian King Ludwig II’s castles: first to Hohenschwangau, where he spent his youth, and then to Germany’s most famous castle, the unfinished model for Sleeping Beauty’s castle in Disney theme parks and the 1959 film. Based on old German knights’ castles, it features a breathtaking view of the Allgäu region.

Walhalla & Danube River

A boat trip down the Danube takes us to one of the best known monuments in the Regensburg area, Walhalla. Commissioned by Bavarian King Ludwig I, this earthly Valhalla overlooks the Danube valley and features busts of important German cultural figures from Holy Roman Emperors to Albert Einstein to Sophie Scholl. Return trip to Regensburg by boat

To help you budget, keep in mind that you are responsible for the cost of your airfare and ground transportation to Regensburg (approx. $1,200-$1,400), textbooks, passport fees (approx. $135), meals & personal expenses (approx. $400/month), independent travel ($1500, optional), pre-departure (in USA) Covid-19 test and on-site (KIIS location abroad) Covid-19 test to return home, and any fees from your college/university.

Although KIIS tries to foresee all possible expenses in formulating program fees, please note that dramatic fluctuations in foreign currency valuations and/or airline surcharges may affect the total cost of the program.

International Flight

Estimated Cost:  $1,200 – $1,300

The Germany Spring Semester program does not offer a group flight option. You will purchase your own roundtrip airfare.

You must plan to arrive in Regensburg the morning of March 2. Flights to Germany are typically overnight flights. Return flights from Germany to the USA are typically the same day. Visit Flights and Passports & Visas for more information.

Visa

Germany Spring Semester program requires you to submit a University of Regensburg Application and Housing forms to the KIIS office. These forms will be in your KIIS application upon acceptance to the program. The KIIS office will forward the documents to Regensburg and the University of Regensburg will issue an individual letter for you to show at Customs when you enter Germany.
