Ancient Greece is often hailed as the birthplace of democracy, but the golden age of Greek democracy was relatively short and animated as much by its critics as its advocates. How did ancient Greeks view politics? To explore ancient Greek thought, this course will examine pre-Socratic visions of government, the Platonic critique of democracy, and the turn from politics in Stoicism and Epicureanism.
