In this course, we will discover the city of Paris through the poems written in its honor. By way of a close reading of Charles Baudelaire’s “Tableaux parisiens,” published in 1861, we will explore why and how the city was able to seduce so many important artists. We will see how Paris, the first modern European city, was transformed, in Baudelaire’s writing, into sounds, syllables, rhythms – in short, into verse. Taught in French.
