The city´s proximity to Madrid, with its vast cultural offerings, make this location ideal for experiencing multiple dimensions of Spanish life.

Note: Studying abroad likely is more physically strenuous than you are used to at home. KIIS study abroad programs typically involve approx. 5-10 miles of walking (approx. 10,000-20,000 steps) or the like in a day, including the possibility of walking, hiking, and climbing stairs in heat and humidity, over elevations at higher altitudes, and over rocky terrain. See Health & Wellness for more information.

Courses

All courses are taught in Spanish and are 3 credit hours. You may enroll in 1-2 courses.

SPAN 373 Spanish Civilization & Culture

Dr. Melissa Stewart

This course is designed to provide students with a critical understanding of Spanish history and culture and foster an appreciation for contemporary Spain’s issues and idiosyncrasies. The course will combine history with a focus on contemporary Spain: its nationalisms, economy, society, and popular culture. All class discussions, assignments, and exams will be completed in Spanish.

SPAN 455 Topics: Spanish Culture through its Gastronomy

Dr. Inma Pertusa

This course will explore the different meanings of food as a part of the culture and daily life of Spain. We will investigate the relationship between food and culture through representations in short stories, audiovisual texts, art, mass media, popular culture and culinary recipes. The course will include a cooking demonstration, a tapas tour, a pastry tasting tour, visit to a wine cellar, visits to local markets, and presentations by chefs and food writers, among other activities.

SPAN 470 Advanced Conversation

Dr. Stephen Hessel

The main goal of this advanced conversation course is to develop greater oral fluency and deeper cultural understanding. The course will emphasize: 1) vocabulary building, 2) review of problematic areas of Spanish grammar for native speakers of English, and 3) meaningful communicative tasks in the community on a variety of cultural, social, economic, and political topics. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 345 Topics: Cervantes’ Short Fiction

Dr. Stephen Hessel

Students will read short fiction written by Spain’s most famous author, Miguel de Cervantes, and investigate these works’ role and relevance in contemporary Spanish society. They will analyze how these texts transcend traditional interpretation and become culturally impactful in multiple and contradictory ways. The final product of this course will be a group video project to present student findings and ideas to address this curious phenomenon. Taught in Spanish.

All KIIS course credit is awarded by Western Kentucky University. Prior to your KIIS program, please speak with your home campus academic advisor and/or study abroad office to determine course equivalencies. Grades will be transferred to your home institution in mid-August after the completion of the program. Course offerings are subject to change according to enrollment.
