Program Overview
Designed to take full advantage of the city’s abundant cultural resources, the KIIS Paris II program offers students a selection of intermediate to advanced French-language courses. With five weeks in Paris, students become intimately familiar with this modern, cosmopolitan city, celebrated for its savoir-faire and joie de vivre. Students are encouraged to use their language skills both in class and while exploring the many sides of this marvelous city. In short, the language experience does not end after exiting the classroom— it only begins as you set out to explore Paris’s venerable architecture, parks, neighborhoods, restaurants, and cafés.
Note: Studying abroad likely is more physically strenuous than you are used to at home. KIIS study abroad programs typically involve approx. 5-10 miles of walking (approx. 10,000-20,000 steps) or the like in a day, including the possibility of walking, hiking, and climbing stairs in heat and humidity, over elevations at higher altitudes, and over rocky terrain. I'm Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Kentucky, where I teach French literature and cinema. Courses
All courses are taught in French and are 3 credit hours. You may enroll in 1-2 courses, except FREN 201 and FREN 202 must be taken together.
FREN 201 (3hrs) and FREN 202 (3hrs) comprise an accelerated, intensive language sequence intended to fulfill both semesters of intermediate French during the summer. The two courses are taken consecutively during the KIIS Paris 2 program, in Paris, France, during the month of July. The two courses focus on the skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and cultural competence in an immersive setting. Students will be required to enroll in both FREN 201 and FREN 202.

In this course, we will discover the city of Paris through the poems written in its honor. By way of a close reading of Charles Baudelaire’s “Tableaux parisiens,” published in 1861, we will explore why and how the city was able to seduce so many important artists. Baudelaire loved the Paris of the boulevards, of the theaters, of the cafés, of the “multitudes,” and, especially, the Paris of modern life. Taught in French.
It is easy to recognize images and representations that are quintessentially “American”. The golden arches, sneakers, a baseball cap, and Superman (Truth, justice and the American way). These visual concepts are ingrained in our daily understanding of “ourselves”. But how is another culture imagined visually or represented? Taught in French.
All KIIS course credit is awarded by Western Kentucky University. Prior to your KIIS program, please speak with your home campus academic advisor and/or study abroad office to determine course equivalencies. Grades will be transferred to your home institution in mid-August after the completion of the program. Course offerings are subject to change according to enrollment. The KIIS Paris II program does not offer a group flight option. You will purchase your own roundtrip airfare.
You must plan to arrive in Paris by 11:00 am on June 27. Flights to France are typically overnight flights which means you must depart the USA by June 26. The Paris II program concludes on July 27.
