Program Overview

Peru engages the stunning Andean world of diverse and extreme landscapes. Open to all majors, the program focuses on archaeology, anthropology, geography and history. We stay in Lima and Nazca, but mostly in the colonial gem of Cusco. We will visit numerous archaeological sites including a flight over the famous Nazca Lines, before reaching Machu Picchu, the most celebrated archaeological site in the Western Hemisphere. Note that many program excursions will be physically strenuous, and will involve much walking at elevations exceeding 10,000 feet/3,200 meters.

Language Requirement: None. All courses are taught in English. 

Accommodations: Hotels and Hostels, 2-4 students per room

All courses are taught in English and are 3 credit hours. You may enroll in 1 course.

ANTH 366 Topics: Archaeology of the Ancient Andean World

Dr. Kelli Carmean

This course engages the many pre-Hispanic indigenous civilizations of the Andes, with a focus on the Inca. Visits to archaeological sites and museums will form an important part of this course.

GEOG 475 Topics: Geography & History of the Andean World

Prof. Ryan Kelly   

This course examines the Spanish Conquest of the Inca, and the geographic imprint left by that conquest upon the landscape. Visits to archaeological and geographical sites and museums will form an important part of this course.

All KIIS course credit is awarded by Western Kentucky University. Prior to your KIIS program, please speak with your home campus academic advisor and/or study abroad office to determine course equivalencies. Grades will be transferred to your home institution in mid-August after the completion of the program. Course offerings are subject to change according to enrollment. To help you budget, keep in mind that you are responsible for the cost of your textbooks & materials, passport fees ($135), ISIC card (required, approx. $25), one meal per day, personal expenses (approx. $500), various immunizations  and any fees from your college/university.

Although KIIS tries to foresee all possible expenses in formulating program fees, please note that dramatic fluctuations in foreign currency valuations and/or airline surcharges may affect the total cost of the program.

Group Flight

Estimated Cost: $1,400 – $1,500

The KIIS Peru program requires a mandatory group flight. KIIS will purchase a roundtrip ticket for you, and the cost will be added to your final program fee on April 1. The group flight will depart from Cincinnati or Louisville.  

Flights to and from Peru are typically overnight flights. The program departs the USA July 9, arriving in Lima the morning of July 10. The program departs Lima July 25, arriving in the USA July 26.
