Based in Berlin's vibrant and centrally located Prenzlauer Berg district, the KIIS German Culture summer program affords participants a unique chance to explore Germany's thriving capital, art, culture, and history. Instruction is divided between formal classwork in the seminar room of our modern hostel, field workshops or studio sessions, and guided excursions providing students direct contact with the city, its streets, and its cultural heritage.
Classes are generally held in two 2-hour and one 4-hour block each week, with the intention of spending the shorter periods in our seminar room and the longer periods in and around Berlin. Opportunities for individual weekend travel enrich participants' understanding of Europe and Germany in general and Berlin in particular. Class sessions are usually held Monday through Thursday for 4.5 weeks, leaving plenty of time for independent planning. German is not a requirement for this program although an interest in German culture is.
Students should be aware that research materials, computers, and printing are limited on site. Laptops are required. Students are responsible for purchasing their own lunch and dinner.
The program director generally arranges several group excursions. Varying from year to year, they may include a trip to nearby Potsdam with its Castle Sanssouci, a visit to the German Parliament (Reichstag), and exploration of the world class and famed Museum Island Museums, a day outing to historical Leipzig, birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach and Goethe, or a musical evening at one of the Berlin's Cathedrals, the Berlin Philharmonic or Opera. We will also share a welcome and farewell dinner.
Please note: No German is required for this program (all instruction is in English). Students with some language proficiency will be able to improve their speaking skills as well as their knowledge of German culture through interaction with locals.
