SPAIN:  A PRACTICUM FOR TEACHERS
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION FOR PROSPECTIVE FACULTY

Since 1998, the Kentucky Institute for International Studies has sponsored a graduate program in Spain designed to provide teachers and prospective teachers with the opportunity to upgrade their language skills, cultural knowledge and pedagogical approaches. Two cities host the program, namely: Segovia, a charming, provincial city in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, located only 60 miles north of Madrid, Spain’s capital, and second program site.

During the first three weeks of the program in Segovia, the students are housed with families in convenient locations throughout Segovia and the faculty stays in an apartment located in the Plaza Mayor of Segovia. For the remaining week, students and faculty are accommodated in a Spanish pension in Madrid.

Each year two graduate/undergraduate courses are taught. The program is open to Spanish teachers, prospective teachers, and to qualified undergraduate students who are Spanish education majors (rising juniors and seniors). All courses are designed to take full advantage of being in Spain. Classes are held five days a week from mid June till the beginning of July (exact schedule will vary). There are weekly and biweekly excursions. Weekends are set aside for independent traveling as much as possible.

Faculty is expected to teach one course per day during the approximately four week academic program, to participate in the planned excursions, and to organize class-related field trips. Following the academic period, faculty may plan independent travel/study or research. Faculty needs to be fluent in Spanish in order to teach in the program. Teaching in the program depends on sufficient enrollment, and faculty is therefore expected to participate actively in all recruiting efforts.

There are usually two orientation meetings which are mandatory--one in Louisville in the fall and one in Lexington in the spring.

Faculty receives a round-trip, international plane ticket, and may be asked to accompany the group flight from the U.S. to Spain. Also included are full room and board while in Segovia and Madrid. Faculty receives a per diem of $1,500 paid prior to the departure of the program.
