Since 1992, the Kentucky Institute for International Studies has offered a program in Morelia, Mexico. Morelia, a city of approximately one million inhabitants, is the state capital of the province of Michoacán. A colonial city virtually untouched by tourists, it is a showcase of Spanish colonial architecture. Morelia has many monuments and sites of considerable cultural and historic interest. In the center of the city stands the plateresque cathedral, dating back to the late 17th century. Just two blocks away are the main buildings of the University of San Nicolás, founded in 1540, which many consider the oldest university in North America. Spanish language and culture are the standard courses offered in Mexico. Course proposals are welcome from most academic disciplines as well as “core” courses. The only requirement is that the courses be designed to take full advantage of being in Mexico. Classes are one and one-half hours in length and are held Monday through Friday for five weeks from late May to late June (exact schedule may vary). Faculty is expected to teach two courses per day during the five-week academic period and to organize class-related excursions. Faculty planning to teach in the program is strongly urged to study Spanish during the year prior to participation. This will greatly enhance their effectiveness while abroad. Teaching in the program depends on sufficient enrollment, and faculty is therefore expected to participate actively in all recruiting efforts. When designing and proposing courses, faculty should consider the program site and the resources it provides, the excursions, and the culture. These courses should integrate the context and culture so students use their experience in Mexico to understand course material and fulfill assignments. There are two faculty orientation meetings which are mandatory – one in Louisville in September and one in Lexington in April. Faculty receives a round-trip, international plane ticket, and may be asked to accompany the group flight from the U.S. to Mexico. Also included is full room and board in Morelia. Faculty receives a per diem of $1,500 paid prior to the departure of the program.
