In the summer of 2006, from around late May to late June, the Kentucky Institute for International Studies will again sponsor a program in Ecuador. The focus of the program is on field studies and will begin in the city of Quito. Refounded in 1534 by the Spanish, Quito is the political capital of Ecuador, an Andean city, and the focus of the nation’s highland culture. The program offers excursions and study trips to a variety of sites which provide exposure to the major topographic regions of Ecuador: the spectacular Andes Mountains; the “Oriente”, which forms a portion of the Amazon Basin; the coastal lowlands; and the world renowned Galápagos Islands. Here, students visit indigenous settlements, hike in the rainforest, and canoe through the region’s river systems. Other trips explore the Andean paramo, the northern province of the lakes, the coastal plains, and the beautiful southern colonial city of Cuenca. Course proposals are welcome from all faculty in the sciences. No “core” courses are offered. Proposals must demonstrate a strong field studies component, indicating how excursions will be integrated into courses. Classes are held either in formal settings or in the field on a regular basis. By virtue of the amount of traveling involved in the program, faculty must be willing to be flexible, adaptable and creative. Faculty members are expected to teach two courses during the academic period, and to assist in class-related excursions. A faculty member planning to teach in the program is strongly urged to study Spanish during the year prior to participation. A basic knowledge of Spanish will enhance greatly the faculty’s effectiveness in the program. Teaching in the program depends on sufficient enrollment and therefore a faculty member is expected to participate actively and vigorously in all recruiting efforts. There are two mandatory faculty orientation meetings – one in Louisville in September and one in Lexington in April. A faculty member receives round-trip transportation with the group and may be asked to accompany the group flight from the U.S. to Ecuador. A faculty member also receives full room and board in Ecuador. Faculty receives a per diem of $1,500 paid prior to the departure of the program.
