THE PROGRAM IN DENMARK:
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION FOR PROSPECTIVE FACULTY

The Kentucky Institute for International Studies will sponsor a program in Denmark again in the summer of 2006.  The program will begin in late May and end in late June.  While the main focus of the program is education, there are several courses in English and Child Development too (proposals in other disciplines are welcome).  The program begins with one week in Copenhagen at the Niels Steensens Gymnasium.  The city of Copenhagen offers numerous cultural resources and opportunities for learning.  The second week we will be in Brenderup near Odense (Hometown of Hans Christian Andersen) for a stay with Danish families.  During the third week, we will make a two-day trip to Skagen, the Northern most village in Denmark.  During the second half of the third week we will travel to Central Denmark to the ancient town of Viborg and stay at the Gymnastics and Sports School of Viborg.

There are several excursions scheduled in the program to allow students and faculty the opportunity to become acquainted with diverse academic settings and ecological regions of Denmark.  Students and faculty will have the pleasure of interacting with Danes on a daily basis and visit other places of interest over long weekends in all four locations.  Come along explore, and teach in, the spectacular cosmopolitan city of Copenhagen, enjoy the historical delights of Odense, and quiet rural appeal of Skagen and Viborg.

Course proposals are encouraged and welcomed in all disciplines, but especially in English and Education.  Proposals must have a strong community excursion component and make use of the resources available at each program location.  Due to the amount of traveling involved in the program, faculty must be flexible, adaptable, and creative.

Faculty members are expected to teach two courses per day during the four-week academic period and to organize class-related excursions.  Following the academic period, faculty may plan independent travel/study or research.  Interested faculty should have a strong interest in the history and culture of Northern Europe.  And they are strongly encouraged to visit during the year prior to participation.  This will greatly enhance their effectiveness while abroad.  Teaching in the program depends on sufficient enrollment.   Faculty is therefore expected to participate actively in all recruiting efforts.

There are two faculty orientation meetings which are mandatory - one in Louisville in September and one in Lexington in April.

Faculty receives a round-trip, international plane ticket, and may be asked to accompany the group flight from the U.S. to Denmark.  Also included is lodging and all meals for the duration of the program at all locations and a private room and meals with a family during the home stay.  Faculty receives a per diem of $1,500 paid prior to the departure of the program.
